Great Poem: Invictus by William Ernest Henley

This is a favorite poem of mine that encompasses personal empowerment, individual freedom, and infinite possibilities.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Great Poem: A Bag of Tools

My Grandpa gave me a book a few years ago that I’ve really enjoyed, a book of poems.  Well, I’m going to share a few here and there and the feature today:

A BAG OF TOOLS

Isn’t it strange
That princes and kings,
And clowns that caper
In sawdust rings,
And common people
Like you and me
Are builders for eternity?

Each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass,
A book of rules;
And each must make–
Ere life is flown–
A stumbling block
Or a steppingstone.
